This blog, along with my other websites, now uses the Umami analytics app. Here are answers to some questions you might have.

Why do you need this?

Well okay, I don't need it, really. I just like having a view counter on my page. If it can also show the originating countries, which is  even better!

Who will see the data?

Nobody other than me. Most of the time not even me, to be honest. My m.o. basically is remembering I have stats once every few months, taking a look, and that's it.

I don't share the data with anyone and don't care about "growing my audience" or any such thing.

Why Umami?

I've used Matomo before. It was clunky and had issues. Then I needed to move it to a different server while keeping the DB in place.
I wanted Matomo to connect to the DB over Tailscale, and I simply couldn't get it to work. (Interestingly, that is the only app where it didn't Just Work.)

That resulted in what my tracking says is only a single outage, lasting 8550 hours. 😂

So I had no stats at all for the past year. 💁🏻‍♀️

The most interesting alternatives were Plausible and Umami. I wanted to go with Plausible but then noticed that Umami has country flags in the country list, which looks pretty. That was the deciding factor.

I've also used this opportunity to move yet another app from MariaDB (which Matomo used) to Postgres.

I have my view counter, and you still have your privacy. All is well.
