Best games of 2016

Looking at this list now, I think if you only had to play one game from this list, make it: The Swapper It's a puzzle platformer with a self-cloning mechanic. There have been a few like it, but The Swapper really shines. The dark and brooding world you find yourself in will haunt and oppress and choke you the entire time. If you care to read all the clues you find, the game tells an unusual, philosophical story that will keep you going forward, with an ending that will leave you pondering your choices in silence. Heroes of the Storm,...

Diving into The Legend of Zelda

I had never played any of the Legend of Zelda games. Of course, I knew a lot about them from hearsay, as probably any gamer on the web does, but that's not the same. Since they also are a pretty important part of gaming history, I'd planned on trying them out for a long time. Now that I have a Nintendo 3DS, I decided to give them a go. After some googling around, I'd found two good candidates: A Link Between Worlds and The Majora's Mask (a remake of the one originally published on Nintendo 64) and bought them second-hand....

Vatta's War, by Elizabeth Moon

I've picked Trading in Danger by Elizabeth Moon more or less at random. It's the first instalment in the Vatta's War pentalogy. It's what I'd describe as a space adventure - it's set mostly in spaceships and stations. Definitely no hard sci-fi here. And don't think too hard about the "science". (Feel free to read on - no spoilers here.) One minor qualm I had was that the plot took a while to get going, but then it told an engaging story about Kylara 'Ky' Vatta, a young daughter in a merchant family. She didn't want to join...

Yet another blog migration.

This blog started some four years ago on Tumblr, but that didn't last very long. WordPress is popular and praised, so I decided to go with it. Now I'm moving to Ghost. This post talks a bit about what I liked (and didn't like) about all of those technologies. WordPress WordPress might have started as a blogging platform, but later became a CMS as well. That is good if you need a CMS - but a total overkill for my needs. Still, it had many things going for it. One of them was WP Network - the ability to have...

Data and Goliath, by Bruce Schneier

I’d recommend Bruce Schneier’s book Data and Goliath: The Hidden Battles to Collect Your Data and Control Your World to anyone who uses (or comes in contact with) any electronic devices. :) It explains, in clear and layman’s terms, how data about us is collected online and off, by both governments and corporations, and how it’s used to spy on us, sell us stuff, violate our privacy or give us actually useful services that provide great value. One of the best things about this book is that while the author openly advocates for the need of privacy...
